Take it.

“No. I don’t want it.”

But it’s yours, Calvin. Take it.

I tossed my head, muddied hair smacking into my cheeks. My fingers clung together refusing to budge even as a force pried on them.

You are to take it.

A crowbar slipped between my palms, the cold metal cutting into my skin. I bit my lip, fighting down the cry of pain while the force pulled harder on my hands. But still they wouldn’t come apart.

If you do not take it…

A whip cracked the air and a cry answered it. My heart stopped and I screamed, “Eli!”

Take it or he will suffer.

Without pause, I opened my hands. Heavy plastic, black as night, forced itself between my palms. On instinct, I clamped down, taking the full weight of the gun in my arms.

There. Eyes frozen solid stared at me, the face framed in white. Accept what I give you, worthless cretin. If you don’t…

The whip cracked again and I cried in pain.

A hand slipped around my stomach. I opened my arms, casting the AR-15 to the ground. Spinning. My body inverted, the floor twisting in a vortex. I landed hard without falling an inch. Pillow, blanket. It was another dream.

And the hand?

Warmth radiated up my back and I spun my head around. For a moment I thought I saw the asshole, his lips soaked in beer, his fist bloody. But the clenching fear faded to reveal dark spirals brushing against my arm.

“Layla?” I sputtered, my heart pounding harder. The wolf wanted to run and I was tempted to join it.

She caressed her palm up my chest, her fingers landing right over my heart. “You were whimpering,” she said, her voice drowsy.

Oh. I’d woken her. Damn it. “It was a…a nightmare. I’m sorry.”

Tickling the back of my neck with her lips, Layla pulled more of her body around mine. I rested back into her arms, the urge to flee fading to a whisper.

“It’s okay,” she said.

I reached to cup her fingers, to thread my hand with hers and hold her with me. But that was selfish. “I’ll be fine. You should head back to bed. The floor’s not comfy.”

Her gentle, soothing breath brushed down my neck. I expected her to slip away, maybe give me a single hug before she returned to the mattress. But Layla said, “If it’s all the same, I’d rather stay here.”

“Oh?”

The beat of her heart slowed mine, calmed it until the panicking ache washed from my limbs. Layla adjusted herself, causing her hair to tickle my cheek. From half-awake lips, she mumbled, “I sleep better with you.”

“Then…” Swallowing down a knot I couldn’t explain, I locked my fingers over hers. Resting deeper in her embrace, I whispered, “Stay.”
